JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team posted an 88-57 win over Auburn University Montgomery Thursday evening at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union, ranked No. 1 in both the WBCA and D2SIDA Media national polls, improved to 10-0 overall and 3-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Auburn University Montgomery dropped to 0-9 on the season and 0-3 in league play.
Union scored the first five points of the game, all coming from Jada Smith. AUM got as close as 18-14 with 3:47 left in the first quarter. Union, however, pushed the lead to double figures with a 21-3 run to lead 39-17 following a 3-pointer from Avree Carpenter. AUM slowly cut the Union lead to just 13 points at the break, 41-28, thanks to 4-of-7 shoot from long range from Brewster (14 first-half points).
Union extended its lead to as many as 22 points in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Union led by a game-high 34 points, 88-54, following a 3-pointer from Jada Perkins.
Union again had four players in double figures, led by the reigning GSC Player of the Week Morgan Martin with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Emily Beard scored 15 points on five 3-pointers. Smith scored 14 and Perkins added 13 points. Union shot 49 percent from the field, 43 percent (13-20) from 3-point range, and 88 percent (7-8).
The 13 three-pointers for Union ties the second most in a game this season.
AUM was led by Jordan Brewster with 22 points on six 3-pointers. Victoria Morales added 12 points and Evelina Avleeve scored 11 points. The Warhawks shot 42 percent from the field, 35 percent (6-19) from long range, and 50 percent (5-10) from the free throw line.
Union out rebounded AUM 34-29, including 11-8 offensively. Union forced 19 turnovers and committed just nine.
