JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team defeated Auburn University at Montgomery 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-12, 25-22) Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. The Lady Bulldogs improved to 5-19 and 2-9 in the Gulf South Conference. Auburn-Montgomery dropped to 9-14 and 0-11 in conference play.
In the first set, both teams played evenly, playing to eleven ties in the set. Union had four unanswered points to give the Lady Bulldogs the 22-17 lead. AUM then responded with four answered points to bring the set back within one point. Kristen Bukowsky won the set for Union with a kill, finishing the set 25-23.
In the second set, Union held on to an early lead until AUM went on a 5-0 run taking back the lead at 9-6. The Warhawks held their lead over the Lady Bulldogs for the rest of the set. AUM won the set 25-20.
The Lady Bulldogs took a commanding lead early in the third set. Union started with a 6-1 run, eventually leading by as many as 10 points. AUM closed the gap to seven points, but could not take back the lead from Union. The Lady Bulldogs extended the lead to double figures and ran off to a 25-12.
The fourth set was another close set for the two teams featuring 13 times. Neither team was able to pull away in the third set. With the set tied at 22-22, Union scored the final three points of the set to win the match. Union snapped a six game skid with the win.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Meghan Delaney with 13 kills, and Rebecca Sexton with 14 assists. Abbie Rahn collected 19 digs, and Claressa Kohler had 18. Bukowsky led with five blocks, and Grace Roberts and Delaney Peterson both had four blocks. Kohler led with three aces, while Audrey Cagle added two aces.
Next up for Union is a non-conference home game against Harding University, Tuesday, October 16th at 6:00 p.m.
