JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team defeated West Georgia, 84-78, Tuesday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia dropped to 8-4 on the season and 4-1 in conference play.
Union took a 4-0 lead after a free throw from
Sara Lytle and a shot from beyond the arc by
Tiffany Rechis.
Jessica Brown quickly responded for the Wolves with a layup making the score 4-2.
Avree Carpenter started a 7-0 run for Union with six minutes left in the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs went into the second quarter with the score 28-18.
Tiara Caldwell started the second quarter for Union with a lay up extending the lead to 12 points. The Wolves responded with a 5-0 run closing the gap to seven points, but
AnnaLea Little stopped the run with a shot from beyond the arc. Rechis added two more 3-pointers followed by a layup from Lytle to give Union a 46-34 lead with 2:12 left in the half. However, the Wolves closed the half with an 8-0 run, closing the gap to 46-42 at the break.
West Georgia continued their run into the third quarter, scoring the first 12 points of the half.
Sara Lytle stopped the Wolves' 20-0 run with a pair of free throws making the score 54-47. Union was outscored 21-10 in the the third quarter.
Chelsey Shumpert opened the fourth quarter for the Bulldogs with a shot from beyond on the arc, making the score 63-59. D'Asia Cain responded for the Wolves with a layup. Union then went on a 9-2 run that put the Lady Bulldogs ahead 68-67. Kayla Carter scored five straight points to put the Wolves back in the lead.
Shumpert hit another 3-pointer, putting Union back within one point with a little under four minutes to play. Little scored at the top of the arc to make the score 74-74 with 2:32 left in the game. Carter responded with a quick layup to give West Georgia lead. Caldwell then finished a fast break layup for the Lady Bulldogs tying the game up at 76-76.
Union scored 10 of the game's final 12 points, including 6-of-8 from the free throw line to seal the win.
Shumpert led Union with 33 points, 11 rebounds, while adding seven assists. Little had 13 points, and Lytle had 12 points.
Jada Perkins led with eight assists. Union shot 48 percent from the field, 45 percent (14-31) from 3-point range, and 59 percent (16-27) from the free throw line.
Carter lead West Georgia with 21 points, while Jessica Brown had 18 points. The Wolves shot 38 percent from the field, 30 percent (6-20) from 3-point range, and 70 percent (24-34) from the free throw line.
