LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Union University women's basketball team posted an 88-81 win at the University of West Alabama Thursday night. Union, ranked No. 16 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll and No. 6 in the D2SIDA Media Poll, improved to 17-1 overall and 10-0 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama dropped to 7-10 on the season and 4-6 in league play.
This was Union's 12th straight win on the season, their longest winning streak since 17 games in 2015-16. Union has also won 14 straight GSC regular season games dating back to last season.
West Alabama led by as many as six points early and led 27-24 after a high scoring first quarter.
Union fought back in the second quarter and with 4:33 left in the half, a free throw from Jada Perkins tied the game at 36-36. After a 14-0 run, Union turned a four-point deficit to a 10-point lead, 46-36. Union led 46-38 at the half.
Union extended their lead to as many as 17 points, 63-46, at the 5:26 mark of the third quarter. West Alabama slowly began to chip away at Union's big lead. The Tigers cut Union's lead down to eight in the third quarter, before Union took a 69-59 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Tigers kept coming and following a 3-pointer from Parker, had cut Union's lead to just three points, 75-72, with 4:18 left in the game. Union's Chelsey Shumpert answered with five straight points on a layup and 3-pointer to give Union an 8-point cushion. West Alabama scored, followed by a layup from Tiffany Rechis keep the 8-point lead. Over the last minute, Union was 6-of-8 from the free throw line to seal the win, 88-81.
Union was led by Shumpert with 30 points and nine rebounds. The reigning GSC Player of the Week, Jada Perkins, scored 22 points with seven assists. Sara Lytle added 17 points and Rechis scored 10 points. Union shot 51 percent from the field, 33 percent (11-33) from 3-point range, and 71 percent (15-21) from the foul line.
West Alabama was led by Field with 16 points, Garrett-Hammett with 15 points, and Daniels with 14 points. The Tigers shot 47 percent from the field, 25 percent (4-16) from long range, and 74 percent (23-31) from the free throw line.
