MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Union University women's basketball team posted an 86-56 win at the University of Montevallo Saturday afternoon. Union, ranked No. 16 in the WBCA Coaches Poll and No. 6 in the D2SIDA Media Poll, improved to 18-1 overall and 11-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Montevallo dropped to 2-17 on the season and 0-11 in league play.
Union's Chelsey Shumpert opened the game with a 3-pointer, but Montevallo answered with seven straight points to lead 7-3. Union scored the next eight points as a part of a 17-3 run lead by double figures, 20-10, with 2:37 left in the first quarter. A 3-pointer from Emily Beard capped the run. Union led 24-14 at the end of the first quarter.
Union broke the game open in the second quarter, thanks in part to an 11-0 run. Union led by as many as 20 points before taking a 41-24 lead into the locker room.
Tiffany Rechis is back-to-back 3-pointers for Union as a part of a 9-0 run to start the third quarter. Union maintained control, exploding for 30 points in the third quarter. Union ended the quarter with a 14-0 run to lead 71-37.
Montevallo scored five straight points to start the fourth quarter as a part of a 9-3 run. But Union's Beard hit her fourth 3-pointer of the game to stop the run. Union held their largest lead of the game, 37 points (84-47), before taking the 86-56 final.
Union boasted five players in double figures led by Sara Lytle with 19 points and nine rebounds. Kyvin Goodin-Rogers posted her best game of the year with Union, finishing with 17 points and eight rebounds. Shumpert added 17 points, Beard 12 points on a game-high four 3-pointers, and Rechis added 11 points. Union shot 46 percent from the field, 39 percent (14-36) from long range, and 88 percent (22-25) from the free throw line.
Montevallo was led by Philpot and Morine with 11 points each, while Smith added 10 points. The Falcons shot 27 percent from the field, 19 percent (5-27) from long range, and 65 percent (15-23) from the free throw line.
