Union women's soccer defeats Shorter 4-1

JACKSON, Tenn.- The Union University women's soccer team won 4-1 in their game Friday night against Shorter University. 

Union improved to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter dropped to 1-4-1 on the season and 0-3 in league play. 

Union went up 1-0 in the ninth minute when the Shorter defense deflected in a own goal. Union put pressure on Shorter the whole first half with 13 shots, but the Bulldogs could not find the back of the net, ending the first half leading 1-0. 

Shorter's Taylor Hendrix tied up the game in the 57th minute. 

The Bulldogs quickly responded with a shot outside the box from Victoria Lucido assisted by Madison Studstill

Five minutes later, Kaylyn Burroughs scored the third goal for Union with an assist by All Herring. 

With less than a minute left in the game, Olivia Schmitke scored Union's last goal to make it 4-1. 

Union out shot Shorter 31-7. Shorter's goalkeeper, Sydney Durham had 10 saves, Kristen Francis had two. 

"I'm really proud of these girls," said Coach Issac Brooks. "Not just for their play on the field, which has been great, but also for the fact that they are trying to glorify God. There really is something special about this team."

The Lady Bulldogs play at home September 24 against Lee University at 2 p.m.
