JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's soccer fell 1-0 to Lee University at Smith Soccer Complex. Union dropped to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the Gulf South Conference. Lee improved to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in league play.
Lee dominated the shots in the first half, topped Union 10-2 in that category, including 5-2 in shots on goal. However, neither team scored in the first 45 minutes of play.
The second half continued as the goalkeepers for each team made save after save. Union edged Lee 11-10 in shots in the second half, with Lee having the 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.
It was not until the 74th minute of play that Lee's Lauren Peters took the ball from Union keeper Kristen Francis as Francis was trying to clear the ball. Peters was able to simply tap in the match's only goal into an empty net.
Union had a couple of late attacks inside the Lee box, but was not able find the tying goal.
Francis recorded 12 saves in the game for Union, keeping the Lady Bulldogs in the match the entire way. Lee's keeper, Haley Gribler had seven saves, keeping Union off the board.
Union was led by Victoria Lucido with five shots while three others had two shots each. Peters for Lee led with four shots.
Lee has won all six matches versus the Lady Bulldogs since the teams moved to NCAA DII. Each of the last four matches have been by the score of 1-0.
Up next for Union will be a pair of GSC road matches. First stop is Delta State Friday, September 29 at 1 p.m. then October 1 at Mississippi College at 1 p.m.
