Union women's soccer defeated by North Alabama 4-1

FLORENCE, Ala- The Union University women's soccer team was defeated 4-1 at  North Alabama on Sunday afternoon. 

The North Alabama Lions quickly showed why they have received votes in the national rankings at No. 26. The Lions scored their first two goals of the match in the first twenty-two minutes of the game. In the 11th minute, the first goal was scored by Shelby Wall with an assist from Beatriz Fernandez, and they struck again in the 21st minute with a goal from Margarida Sousa assisted by Haley Yarber and Kristen Sinden. 

The Bulldogs finally responded in the 23rd minute with an unassisted goal from Shelby High, her first for this season.

The teams went into the half with a score of 2-1. 

Union held off the Lions until the 56th minute, when North Alabama's Shelby Wall scored off a free kick right outside the box. 

The final goal of the match came off a corner kick by Kristen Sinden and Haley Yarber finishing the chance for North Alabama, making the final score 4-1.

The Bulldogs out shot the Lions 11-10. Taylor Knight led Union with four shots, three on goal. Olivia Schmitke attempted two shots for Union as well. 

Kristen Francis recorded 1 save for the match, and North Alabama's Shelby Thornton had three saves. 

Up next for Union is a home game against Spring Hill College on Friday, September 15 at 5 p.m.
