Union women's soccer tops Spring Hill 6-0 in home opener

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's soccer team posted a 6-0 victory over Spring Hill College Friday night at Smith Soccer Complex. Union improved to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Spring Hill dropped to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in league play. 

Union used a balanced attack to get their first victory of the season. Union got goals from six different Lady Bulldogs. 

The first goal came early in the contest when Union's Taylor Knight took a pass from Tiffany Linser in the eighth minute to give the Lady Bulldogs the 1-0 lead. That score stood for the remainder of the first half. 

Union outshot Spring Hill 13-0 in the first 45 minutes. 

Union got 13 more shots in the second half, but this time, the Lady Bulldogs made them count. Five goals in the second half, including two in the first 10 minutes of play put the match out of reach. 

Hannah Hewett scored in the 51st minute, assisted by Madison Studstill. Studstill then scored on a free kick in the 54th minute. Alli Herring scored on an assist from Georgia Hopkins in the 70th minute. Madison Wirth added a goal in the 74th minute, assisted by Austen Deloach. The duo then swapped roles in the 81st minute when Deloach scored the final goal on an assist from Wirth. 

Kristen Francis played the first 70 minutes in goal, facing no shots on goal. Anna Venckus was in net the final 10 minutes with one save. Hannah Shankman played all 90 minutes in goal for Spring Hill, getting seven saves. 

Up next for Union will be the second of three straight home matches, Friday, September 22 versus Shorter at 5 p.m.
