JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team lost for the first time in the 2017 GSC Tournament 6-1 to top-seeded Delta State University. Union, the fifth seed, moved to 1-1 in pool play, while DSU stayed perfect at 2-0.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Union starter Teddie Christie got the Statesmen in order in the first. Union leadoff hitter David Robins singled up the middle to open the bottom half of the frame. He was erased on a double player.
- Delta State, the visiting team on their home field in this second round of the 2017 GSC Tournament, took the lead in the top of the second. Josh Russell hit a deep 2-run home run over the left field foul poll.
- DSU starter Seth Birdsong settled in and allowed no hits after the leadoff single from Robins over the first five innings of work. Union's only baserunner after Robins' hit to leadoff the game was Zach Phillips on a hit-by-pitch.
- With the score still 2-0 in the top of the sixth, Delta State put together a 2-out rally to scored three runs to extend their lead to 5-0. The big hit was a 2-RBI double from Nick Morgan. following an RBI single from Justin Nussbaum. The first five runs for DSU where all driven in by the 7-9 hitters.
- Union's Ryan Roper snapped an streak of 11 straight batters retired by Birdsong with a single to leadoff the bottom of the sixth. After a strikeout, Robins got his second hit of the day to put runners on first and second with one out, Union's first runner at second base in the game. The runners moved up to second and third on slow ground out to first by Tyler Mauzy, but were stranded after Birdsong's sixth strikeout of the game.
- The Statesmen added another run, unearned, in the top of the seventh. After a one out throwing error from Nolen Milton, the GSC Player of the Year Zach Shannon delivered an RBI single to left to set the score at 6-0.
- Union got on the board with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Zach Wylie led off with a double to right field. After a fly ball out by Zach Phillips that sent the DSU right fielder up against the wall, Dylan Moore singled to left field to drive in Wylie.
- Neither team scored for the final two innings, setting the final score at 6-1 in favor of the top-seeded Statesmen.
POSTGAME STATS
- Union had six hits in the game led by Robins with two. Wylie, Phillips, Moore and Roper added one each. Moore had Union's lone RBI.
- Delta State managed eight hits led by Ellis and Russell with two each. Russell and Morgan led with two RBI each. Five of the six RBI for DSU came from the 7-9 hitters.
- DSU's Birdson (9-1) earned the win with seven innings of work, allowing one run on five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Peytwon white tossed 1.2 innings of relief, allowing no runs on one hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Zach Osborn closed the game out with the final two outs of the ninth.
- Union's Teddie Christie (8-5) took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks in 5.2 innings of work. Austin Kitterman tossed the final 3.1 innings, allowing just one unearned run with two strikeouts and no walks.
