CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Union University baseball team earned the program's first ever Gulf South Conference postseason win Saturday afternoon in a 9-5 win over Valdosta State in the opening contest of the 2017 GSC Tournament.

WHAT HAPPENED
- It was the Bulldogs who took the early lead in the game with a solo homer in the top of the first inning from Tyler Mauzy. Union stretched their lead in top of the second on a sacrifice fly out from Austin Orr that scored Dylan Moore from third base.
- The Blazers got on the board in the bottom of the third by way of the sacrifice fly scoring an unearned run from third to cut the Union lead to just one, 2-1.
- The Union offense exploded in the top of the fifth with back-to-back homers from Hayden Lewis and Dylan Moore. The three run shot from Lewis left the yard in right center scoring Zach Phillips and Zach Wylie with Moore following that up with a solo shot down the right field line to put the Bulldogs ahead 6-1.
- The Blazers closed the gap with a four run inning of their own scoring on a wild pitch and a three run homer squeezing out down the right field line from Clint Carr returning the contest to a one run game.
- The Bulldogs squeezed across an insurance run in the top of the eighth with an RBI single from Dylan Moore into left field that scored Nolen Milton all the way from second base.
- Union pushed across two more runs in the top of the ninth on an error and a wild pitch to push their lead to 9-5.
POSTGAME STATS
- JR Miler started on the mound for Union earning his ninth win of the season going 6.1 innings giving up only four earned runs. The sophomore All-GSC honoree retired 11 straight batters going into his final of inning of work. Austin Kitterman finished the seventh and tossed a clean eighth walking one with three strikeouts. Marty Coursey entered the game in the ninth allowing a hit, but stranded him to seal the win for the Bulldogs.
- Eight of nine Bulldog hitters earned hits in the contest with six recording multi hit games. Dylan Moore, Zach Wylie and Tyler Mauzy led the way with three hits each, all earning extra base hits. Moore and Mauzy both homered in the game and Hayden Lewis knocked in three runs on his three run shot in the fifth.

Union looks to stay perfect in the tournament taking on top seeded Delta State at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. The final game of pool play for Union will take place Monday morning when they play No. 8 Alabama Huntsville at 10:00 a.m.
