CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team completed a 3-game weekend sweep over Gulf South Conference foe Lee University. Union won 6-5 in game three to earn the sweep and move into sole possession of second place in the GSC standings with three weekends left in the regular season.
Union won 11-4 and 5-3 in the Saturday double-header.
In game three, the first inning produced six of the game's 11 runs with Union get two in the top of the first.
Zach Wylie got the scoring started with a RBI single. Later in the inning,
Hayden Lewis walked with the bases loaded to put Union up 2-0. Lee answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, starting with a 3-run home run from Wiergac. Lee added the fourth run on a balk from Union. Bulldog starter
Skyler Harrison lasted just two-thirds of an inning, allowing four runs on four hits with a balk.
The pitching settled in and the 4-2 score lasted until the bottom of the seventh inning when Lee added a run to make it 5-2. Payne was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
However, in the top of the eighth, Union got four runs.
Austin Orr started the scoring with an RBI single.
Tyler Mauzy then drove in a run on a fielder's choice, while another run scored on the play due to a throwing error.
Nolen Milton added a RBI double to give Union the 6-5 lead.
Austin Kitterman tossed 4.2 innings of relief of Harrison, allowing no runs on two hits.
Joe Hudson then tossed one inning, allowing one run on one hit.
Marty Coursey (4-2) pitched the final three innings to earn the win. He allowed no runs and no hits with two strikeouts. Joe Parete (4-2) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs on three hits with two walks and a strikeout.
Union got seven hits in the game, led by Wylie and Orr with two hits each. Five different Bulldogs tallied one RBI each.
Up next for Union will be a home series, Friday and Saturday, April 14-15 versus North Alabama. UNA is currently in a three way tie for third place, just one game behind the second place Bulldogs.
