Union baseball sweeps GSC double header at Lee

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team swept a Gulf South Conference double header Saturday at Lee University taking their third series in the last four weekends of conference action.

Game 1: Union 11-4 Lee
WHAT HAPPENED
  • Lee started off the scoring in the first game of the double header with an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the first that scored one run.
  • Union took the lead and then some in the next frame pushing across five runs courtesy of a two run homer from Zach Phillips, a two run triple from Austin Orr and an RBI single from Tyler Mauzy that gave the Bulldogs a 5-1 advantage.
  • After the Flames scored a run in the bottom of the second, Union pushed across two more runs in the fourth with Hayden Lewis scoring on a balk by the home pitcher and an RBI single from Mauzy that scored Ryne Roper from third that gave Union the 7-2 lead.
  • Nolen Milton added to the Bulldog advantage in the top of the sixth with a three run homer to left center moving the score to 10-3. Orr pushed across another run in the seventh on an RBI single up the middle. The Flames scored a run in the bottom of the eighth, but ultimately fell short 11-4.

 

 
POSTGAME STATS
  • JR Miller tossed another spectacular outing going 7 innings giving up only three runs while striking out seven Lee batters to earn his sixth win of the year. Austin Kitterman finished off the remaining six outs in relief without giving up a hit and striking out one batter. 
  • Austin Orr had a breakout game at the plate going 4-for-5 with a triple and three RBI while Nolen Milton's three RBI on his tenth homer of the season added to the Union effort. Hayden Lewis, Zach Phillips and Tyler Mauzy each added two hits in the contest. 


 

Game 2: Union 5-3 Lee
WHAT HAPPENED
  • Union rallied in the opening frame scoring four runs led off by a two RBI single from Zach Wylie that scored both Tyler Mauzy and David Robins. Zach Phillips followed that up with an RBI double to left center that scored Wylie finished off by Phillips coming home on a wild pitch to lead 4-0 after a half inning.
  • The Flames put up a run in the bottom half of the first and two more in the third on a homer to left from Nathan Wierzgac to cut the Union lead to one, 4-3.
  • The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the sixth when Austin Orr singled to right scoring Mason Castile to set the final score at 5-3.

 
POSTGAME STATS
  • Teddy Christie started on the mound for Union only lasting 3.1 innings after giving up three runs in the fourth. He was replaced by Joe Hudson who tossed 2.2 innings in relief earning the win and improving to 3-0 on the season. Marty Coursey then earned the save recording the final three outs for his fourth of the year.
  • Zach Wylie and Zach Phillips both ended the game with two hits apiece, with Orr and Mauzy recording the other two hits in the game.

Union goes for the series sweep on Sunday afternoon with first pitch slated for 12:00 pm local time.
