JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team posted a 10-0 victory over the University of West Georgia at Fesmire Field Friday afternoon to open the 3-game series. Union improved to 31-16 overall and 18-12 in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia dropped to 16-29 on the season and 7-23 in league play.
Bookend 2-run homers sparked the 10-0 run-rule victory for the Bulldogs.
Nolen Milton started the scoring with a 2-run home run in the first inning, scoring
Tyler Mauzy. It was his team leading 13th home run of the season. The score remained 2-0 until the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth inning,
Hayden Lewis reached on an error to start the inning. He later scored on a wild throw on a double play attempt. Mauzy singled with two outs to drive in
Austin Orr. Milton followed with a RBI single to score
David Robins.
Zach Wylie then doubled to drive in a pair of runs as Milton and Mauzy scored. The score was 7-0 at the end of five.
Union added a run in the six when Mauzy walked with the bases loaded. Then in the bottom of the seventh,
Zach Phillips hit a 2-run home run to end the game. For Phillips, it was his 11th home run of the season.
Union starter
JR Miller (8-1) struggled with control early, throwing 52 pitches through the first three innings. However, the sophomore pitched out of trouble early and settled in for his first complete game of the season. It was also the fourth shutout of the year for Union. Miller scattered four hits and four walks in seven innings, but used three timely strikeouts and a double-play from his defense to keep the Wolves off the board.
Tyler Garner (2-2) took the loss for West Georgia, allowing eight runs, only three earned, on eight hits with no walks or strikeouts in the game in 5.1 innings of work. Joseph Watson tossed the final two-thirds of the sixth inning and did not retire a batter in the seventh, giving up two runs on one hit with a hit-by-pitch.
Ryne Roper, along with Mauzy and Milton led with two hits each. Milton led with three RBI, while Mauzy, Wylie and Phillips all had two RBI.
These two teams will play the a double-header at Union, Saturday at 1 p.m. It will be the final games of the year for West Georgia. Union will have one more regular season game left at UT Martin Tuesday, May 2. Union will then travel to the GSC Tournament May 6-9 at the home of the regular season champion.
