Union baseball splits doubleheader at Alabama Huntsville

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team split the opening double header at Alabama Huntsville Sunday afternoon in their hunt for the programs first Gulf South Conference Tournament berth.

Game One
WHAT HAPPENED
  • Its was the Chargers that got on the board first plating a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single through the right side.
  • The Bulldogs evened the score in the next frame with an RBI single through the left side courtesy of Dylan Moore that scored Zach Phillips.
  • After another run in the bottom half of the second inning from Alabama Huntsville, Union took their first lead of the contest in the fourth inning with a two run homer to right center from Zach Phillips to make the score 3-2. The Bulldogs stretched their lead in the fifth and sixth innings with and RBI double from Zach Wylie scoring two runs and a solo home run from Hayden Lewis to make the score 6-2.
  • The Chargers rallied in the six and seventh innings to cut the Union lead to just one run,6-5, but the Bulldogs held on to seal the win.

 
POSTGAME STATS
  • JR Miller started on the mound for Union earning his seventh win of the season tossing 6.0 innings giving up four earned runs on 10 hits and striking out three. Austin Kitterman entered in relief throwing 2,0 scoreless innings with Marty Coursey closing out the game to earn his fifth save of the year.
  • Union recorded ten hits in the game with Tyler Mauzy, Nolen Milton, Zach Phillips and Dylan Moore all recording two hits in the game.


Game Two
WHAT HAPPENED
  • Alabama Huntsville took control of the second half of the double header wit a five run bottom half of the third including a three run and  solo homer, combined with an RBI single.
  • The Chargers added two more runs in the fourth on an RBI double into right to take the 7-0 lead. 


POSTGAME STATS
  • The Bulldogs only managed two hits in the contest, both in the fourth inning from Tyler Mauzy and Hayden Lewis.
  • Ryne Roper got his first start of his career on the mound lasting 2.1 innings giving up five runs before being lifted. The senior gave up six hits and striking out two. Joe Hudson and Cooper Bullough came out of the pen for the Bulldogs each lasting 1.1 innings with Walter Rook earned recorded the final three outs giving up just one hit.

Union goes for their sixth GSC series win on Monday afternoon in the third and final game of the series against the Chargers, with first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.
