No. 17 UAH takes down Union softball

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Union University softball team dropped a three-game series to No. 17 University of Alabama in Huntsville. Union fell to 23-27 on the season and 7-23 in league play. Alabama Huntsville improved to 36-14 for the season and 21-9 in the GSC.
 
In the first game against the Chargers, Union bats were unable to produce any runs to fall 6-0. The Lady Bulldogs scattered five hits in the game. Ashley Scott led Union at the plate going 2-for-3. Gabby Morris took the loss in the circle giving up five runs on six hits in her four innings of work. Ashley Graves and Taylor Griffith each pitched an inning in relief. Graves gave up one unearned run on no hits while Griffith gave up just two hits. Alabama Huntsville was led by Ashley Cornell going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Tyler Harrison earned the win in her five-hit shutout.
 
The Lady Bulldogs got their bats going in the second game of the double-header, but would still fall, 5-2. Union scored first in the fourth inning on a triple down the left field line off the bat of LaDesha Nelson to score Paige Robertson. The Lady Bulldogs would take a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning as Morris scored on Haley Barnette's single to right field. UAH's bats would come alive in the bottom half of the sixth as the Chargers picked up five runs, four of which came from a grand slam by Sarah Jordan. Union was unable to get a rally going in the seventh to set the final, 5-2.
 
Barnette and Nelson had the only RBIs of the game for the Lady Bulldogs while both going 1-for-3 at the plate. The loss went to Parker Davis, going six innings while giving up five runs, four earned, on seven hits. In the other dugout, Alabama Huntsville was led by Sarah Jordan with her four RBIs and going 2-for-3. Emily Glover started the game, going just five innings and giving up two runs, one earned. Harrison came on in relief to earn the win for the Chargers in her two innings of work.
 
The UAH bats really came to life in the third game of the series in their 8-0 win over Union. The Chargers put up six runs in the first inning to break the game open. They would then score their final two runs in the sixth inning to earn the mercy rule win. The Lady Bulldogs managed just one hit in the game which was in the second inning as Nelson singled up the middle.
 
Davis and Morris combined to give up 11 hits to Alabama Huntsville and eight runs while Davis took the loss. UAH's Emily Glover went 5.2 innings giving up just one hit with six strikeouts. Taylor Doriety came on in relief to get the final out. At the plate, the Chargers were led by Brooke Miller with three RBIs while three other UAH players had a multi-hit day.
 
The Lady Bulldogs will return home for their final games on the season as they take on the University of West Georgia. Saturday, April 29 will be a double header starting at 1 p.m. while the single game Sunday will also start at 1 p.m.
