Union baseball takes rubber match over West Florida

     
JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team held on to win the rubber game of a three game Gulf South Conference series with West Florida in a 6-5 victory Sunday afternoon.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The Argos jumped on the board in the top of the first with an RBI single scoring a single run.
  • Union was quick to answer scoring two in the bottom half of the first with four straight singles from Tyler Mauzy, Nolen Milton, Zach Wylie, and Zach Phillips.
  • The Bulldogs put three more on the board in the bottom of the third on RBI doubles from Wylie and Hayden Lewis to give Union the 5-1 lead.
  • West Florida made a comeback in the top of the fourth with a leadoff triple that scored on an RBI single two batters later and a three run homer that tied the game at 5-5 later in the inning.
  • Union was quick to the response once again with Zach Phillips knocking a solo homer to dead centerfield giving Union the one run advantage 6-5 after five innings of action. 
  • The Argos pushed threatened in the top of the eighth, but Union worked out of the jam and recorded a perfect ninth to seal the series win.

 
POSTGAME STATS
  • Skyler Harrison started on the mound for Union going 4.1 innings in the start giving up five runs on seven hits. Austin Kitterman entered in the top of the fifth inning recording the final two outs then working the next three frames without giving up a run on three hits to earn his first win of the season and move to 1-2 on the year. Marty Coursey earned the save in the game going firing a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to finish out the win.
  • Union's bats wooke up in the final game of the series recording 14 hits with Tyler Mauzy and Zach Wylie each recording three hits on the day. Nolen Milton and Zach Phillips each had two hits in the game including the go ahead homer from Phillips in the fifth.


 
UP NEXT
The Bulldogs conclude their nine game home stand with a midweek contest against Arkansas-Monticello on Tuesday with first pitch slated at 2:00 p.m.
