JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team defeated Henderson State University 5-4 in dramatic fashion at Fesmire Field. Union improved to 27-15 overall, while Henderson State dropped to 23-17.
Union rallied from a 4-0 deficit, including a run in the bottom of the ninth. With the score tied 4-4, Union's
Austin Orr looped a one out double down the left field line. Then, Union DH
Tyler Mauzy took the first pitch he saw and hit a double deep down the left field line that feel just past a diving left fielder into the corner to score Orr from second and win the game.
Henderson State scored one run in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth inning. Three of the four runs for the Reddies came with two outs. Union was held scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when
Zach Phillips single just before a 2-run home run to right center field by
Hayden Lewis. Union tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning when
Nolen Milton drove in Mauzy with a two run home run to left center field.
Both teams' starters went five innings. Henderson State's Austin Cross tossed five innings, allowing no runs on three hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. Union's
Skyler Harrison went five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and a walk.
Six total pitchers pitched for HSU, with the final reliever Blake Patterson (0-3) taking the loss. He entered the game in the eighth inning after Union had tied the game and had two runners on base with no outs. Patterson got the next three hitters, two by way of the strikeout. After retiring the first hitter of the ninth on a lineout to second base, Union got the back-to-back doubles to win the game. Kris Priddy (2), Beau Shelby (1) and Jay Hawley (1) all gave up runs for HSU. Logan DeRosier tossed a scoreless seventh inning for the Reddies.
Union had four pitchers throw in the game.
Austin Kitterman tossed two innings of scoreless ball, allowing just one hit in relief of Harrison.
Joe Hudson tossed a perfect eighth inning prior to
Marty Coursey (5-2) pitching to three batters in the ninth. Coursey allowed one hit but Union's Jessie Kelley got the runner attempting to steal when the Union coaching staff called a perfectly timed pitchout.
Union was led by Milton, Lewis and
Ryne Roper with two hits each. Lewis and Milton led with two RBI each. HSU was led by Nolan Ryan with three hits and Parker Jones with two hits. Ryan led with two RBI.
Up next for Union will be a weekend GSC road series at Alabama Huntsville.
