Union baseball falls 3-2 in late inning thriller at home

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team lost 3-2 to the University of West Alabama Saturday afternoon. West Alabama took the series, two game to one. Union tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the eight with a home run, before West Alabama won the game 3-2 with a solo shot in the top of the ninth. Union got two runners on in the bottom of the frame with no outs, but could not score.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The game was scoreless over the first two innings. West Alabama got one hit each in each of the first two innings, while Union went hitless. Union however, got the bases loaded int he bottom of the second with two walks and a hit-by-pitch. But the Bulldogs left all three runners stranded. 
  • West Alabama took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the third. The Tigers scored when Delgado hit an RBI triple, then scored on a groundout later in the inning.
  • Union answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third inning on a solo home run to left field by Nolen Milton with two outs.  
  • The starting pitchers for both teams, Skyler Harrison for Union and Seth Holbert for West Alabama settled in and put up zeros for their teams over the next four and one-half innings. 
  • Union tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on a home run from Zach Phillips, his third home run of the series. 
  • However, West Alabama respond to regain the lead with a solo home run from Tyler Lee in the top of the ninth. It was the first run scored by the Tigers since the third inning.
  • Union got the first two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth when David Robins walked and Tyler Mauzy singled. However, Union struck out twice in the inning and failed to score. 
POSTGAME STATS
  • Union got two hits from Robins, Mauzy and Phillips in the game. Bulldog RBI's game from solo home runs from Milton and Phillips. 
  • Harrison (2-2) took the loss for Union, going this distance and allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk. 
  • West Alabama got two hits from Lee, including the game-winning solo home run in the top of the ninth. The Tigers also got RBI's from Delgado and Little. 
  • Holbert started and went seven innings, allowing one run on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks for the no-decision. Redden (1-0) tossed one inning, allowing one run on one hits with a strikeout and two walks to earn the win. Porter got his second save of the year with one innig of work, allowing no runs, one hits and two strikeouts.
