Bulldogs unable to hold on in overtime against VSU

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Union University men's basketball team was unable to hold on to fall 89-75 in overtime to Valdosta State University. This is the second straight game that Union has faced overtime. Valdosta State currently sits atop the GSC standings.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Union and Valdosta went back and forth early in the first half. Union would then go on a 15-0 run to take a 17-6 lead over the Blazers. In the run, Nick Velasquez hit back to back three's to help the Bulldogs. Union again went on a run scoring 11 straight to take a 20 point lead, 30-0, with 7:41 left in the first half. The Blazers would hold the Bulldogs to just nine points the rest of the half to get within 12 of Union, 39-27.
  • Valdosta State worked their way within six points of Union, but the Bulldogs were able to halt the Blazers to get the points back to have a 47-37 point lead. Valdosta would not give up as they were able to cut Union's lead to 52-49 after scoring five straight with 11:23 left in the game.
  • The Blazers would take the lead for the first time since early in the first half, 57-56, after banking a three to cap off a 7-0 run. Charlie Wilson would break the Valdosta run with a layup to give Union a 57-56 lead. VSU would again take back the lead on a pair of free throws, 58-57 with 7:15 remaining. Alex Keel would come in for Union and banked a 3-pointer and a jumper to boost the Bulldogs to a 62-58 lead.
  • With 56 seconds remaining, Valdosta was able to tie the game 74-74. Neither team would score in the remaining time to push the game to overtime. The Blazers score first in the overtime and never look back. VSU would surge at the right time, going on a 13-0 run to end the game with the lead, 89-75.

STAT OF THE GAME
Valdosta State held Union to just one point in overtime, outscoring the Bulldogs 15-1 to seal the victory, 89-75.

TEAM STATS
  • Union shot 41 percent from the field, 31 percent (11-for-35) from 3-point range, and 71 percent (12-for-17) from the free throw line.
  • Valdosta State shot 42 percent from short range, 28 percent (8-for-29) from long range, and 77 percent (23-for-30) from the charity stripe.
  • VSU out-rebounded Union 48-36 in the game with the Blazers taking 33 defensive rebounds compared to Union's 26.

PLAYER STATS
  • Alex Keel led the Bulldogs with 16 points while Charlie Wilson and Jarad Scott each had 12 points. Ashanti Day led with eight rebounds.
  • Jeremiah Hill would lead all scorers with 30 points for the Blazers. Saadiq Muhammad would pull down 13 rebounds to help the Blazers to the win.
