Union baseball knocks off Magicians with 4-2 win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team took down LeMoyne-Owen, 4-2, Tuesday afternoon in a pitching matchup between the two teams.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Union struck first in the low scoring affair with a single run with Tyler Mauzy coming in to score on a error by the second basemen for the 1-0 Union lead.
  • The Magicians then took the lead in the bottom half of the fifth with two unearned runs on a passed ball and a ground out. 
  • The Bulldogs tied the game in the very next frame with an RBI single from Mauzy driving in Hayden Lewis from second base.
  • Union took the lead in the eighth on an RBI single from Austin Orr that scored Lewis and added another run in the top of the ninth with a sacrifice fly out from Dylan Moore to left field that allowed Nolen Milton to score from third and take the 4-2 lead.

STAT OF THE GAME
There were a combined eight errors in the game, four for each team, leading to only two earned runs scored in the contest, both scored by Union.

 
POSTGAME STATS
  • Tommy Weiler started his second game of the year on the mound on his way back from injury tossing three innings giving up just two hits and striking out three batters. Skylar Harrison came in in relief tossing three innings of his own giving up two unearned runs without giving up a hit and striking out four batters. Cooper Bullough earned the win in the contest to improve to 2-0 on the season going 2.0 innings giving up three hits and striking out two batters. Ryne Roper earned the save throwing the bottom of the ninth striking out two batters.
  • Hayden Lewis led the Bulldogs at the plate going 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Nolen Milton also had two hits in the game, both singles, and a run scored.
