CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team posted a double-header split at No. 20 Delta State University Saturday afternoon. Union lost the first game 10-8 in 10 innings, then took game two 10-4. Union improved to 16-2 on the season and 7-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State is now 11-4 overall and 5-2 in league play.
In game two, Union used the extra base hit to scored 10 runs in the win. Union scored twice in the first with an RBI triple from
Nolen Milton, followed by an RBI double by
Zach Wylie. After the Statesmen scored in the third to cut their deficit to 2-1, Union added five runs in the fifth. The big blow was a grand slam by
Dylan Moore. Union got three more runs in the sixth on a 3-RBI double from
Zach Phillips.
David Robins led in the game, going 4-for-5 with two runs. Eight different Union players had at least one hit in the game.
Teddy Christie (5-0) stayed perfect on the season, allowing three runs on four hits with two strikeouts and four walks in 5.0 innings of work. Ryan Roper got the final four outs in the game with two strikeouts.
Union started the day with an offensive explosion as well. Jumping out to a lead with five runs in the top of the second inning. The first two runs came on bases loaded walks, the next two on a DSU error, and the fifth on a wild pitch. Phillips had a two run home run in the fourth to give Union an 8-3 lead. Both teams scored in each the second, third and fourth innings. Union led 5-1 after two innings, 6-3 after the third and then added two more in the fourth to lead 8-3. DSU responded with five in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. Neither team scored again until DSU got a two run home run in the bottom up the 10
th innings from Shannon.
Tyler Mauzy , Phillips and Roper each added two hits in the game.
Austin Kitterman (0-1) took the loss in relief, allowing four runs, two earned, with three strikeouts in six innings of work. Kitterman relieved
JR Miller who lasted just 3.2 innings with six runs, three earned.
The two teams will play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 2 p.m.
