JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team dropped their first game of the 2017 season, in a 23-5 loss to Maryville in their final game of the three game series.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Maryville started the scoring early putting five runs on the board in the top of the second inning. The Saints started the inning off with a triple followed by an RBI single, and RBI triple and a homerun to jump ahead 5-0.
- The Saints added to their lead in the third with another RBI single. Maryville put up another five runs in the fourth and to push their lead to 11-0.
- Union finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Ryne Roper doubled in Nolen Milton, who led off the inning with a double of his own to left.
- Maryville scored another four runs in the fifth thanks to four more hits making the score 15-1.
- Union scored two more runs in the bottom half of the fifth with an RBI single from Milton scoring Tyler Mauzy and another RBI single from Charlie Ellis to move the score to 15-3.
- Maryville scored another two runs in the seventh, but Union got a run back in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double from Milton.
- The Bulldogs put up another run in the eighth on an RBI double from Brady Holbrook, but could not stop the bleeding and fell 23-5.
POSTGAME STATS
- Union used six pitchers in the contest with Marty Coursey starting the game going just two innings earning his first loss of the season.
- One bright spot for the Union offense was sophomore Nolen Milton who went 4-for-5 with three doubles and two RBI in the game. Tyler Mauzy also had a good day at the plate going 3-for-3 at the plate.
- A total of 44 players played in the game including 11 pitchers.

Union gets back on the road for their next five games starting with a single game on Tuesday, February 14th, at Arkansas Monticello. The Bulldogs open Gulf South Conference play next weekend when they travel to Rome, Ga. to take on Shorter.
