CLINTON, Miss. – The Union University women's basketball team posted a 98-71 win at Mississippi College Thursday night to open Gulf South Conference play. Union, receiving votes in the D2SIDA Media Poll, improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. Mississippi College dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the GSC.
Union welcomed back
Tiara Caldwell for her first game of the year, scoring 16 points and grabbing four rebounds. She missed the first six recovering from an injury. Caldwell played for Union in the 2015-16 season, leading Union with 15.1 points per game, while adding 7.1 rebounds per game.
Union posted their biggest point output of the season to-date with 98 points. Union was consistent all night, scoring at least 21 points in each quarter.
The game started with both teams going back and forth over the first five minutes. The game was tied 11-11 with 5:34 left in the first quarter, Union then posted a 5-0 run to take the lead for good. By the end of the first quarter, Union led 23-17.
Union continued to extend their lead with 29 points in the second quarter, their best offensive quarter of the game. Union led 52-36 at the half. Union's
Chelsey Shumpert, the 3-time reigning GSC Player of the Week, led all scorers with 17 points at the half. Union shot 63 percent from the field and 50 percent (5-10) from the 3-point line.
Union added 21 points in the third quarter and 25 points in the fourth quarter to push the final to 98-71. Union held their largest lead of the game of 27 points, 95-68, with 2:43 left in the game.
Union was led by Shumpert's game-high 31 points with three 3-pointers.
Tiffany Rechis poured in 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting from 3-point range. Caldwell added 16 in her season debut, while
Anna Lea Little scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Union finished the game shooting 59 percent form the field, 52 percent (12-23) from long range, and 72 percent (18-25) form the free throw line.
Mississippi College was led by Kelley Allen with 29 points and 13 rebounds. Zan Ratcliff added 14 points. The Choctaws shot 39 percent from the field, 22 percent (5-23), and 48 percent (12-25) from the free throw line.
