Alabama Huntsville tops Union volleyball 3-0

ACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-22) to The University of Alabama in Huntsville Friday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union dropped to to 13-15 overall and 3-10 in the Gulf South Conference. UAH improved to 21-10 on the season and 9-4 in the GSC. 

Union and UAH played close for the entire night, with the Chargers edging Union in all three sets. 

In the first set, neither team led by more than two points for the first half of the set. Union held a 15-13 lead when UAH took control. The Chargers scored five straight to grab the lead for good. After Union stopped to run to make is 18-16, the Chargers extended their lead to 24-16. Union had a late run to set the score at 24-21 after three straight aces from Taylor Chiaro. However, a service error ended the set at 25-21

In the second set, Union controlled a small lead early in the set, jumping out 8-4 and led 10-7. The teams stayed close and with Union leading 14-12, UAH scored seven of the next eight points to take a 19-15 lead. Union then stormed back, scoring nine of the next 11 points to lead 24-21 thanks to kills from Abbie Rahn and Clare Taylor. UAH spoiled Union's set point with three straight points to tie the game. Union answered to lead 25-24, but gave up three points to UAH and fell 27-25. 

The third set was more of the same as neither team led by more than three points early. With UAH up 15-13, the Chargers scored four straight to lead 19-13. Union again stormed back with four straight and six of seven to cut the deficit to 20-19. Back and forth for the next six points to set the score at 23-22, UAH. A couple of late attack errors led to UAH's 25-22 match clinching victory. 

Union was led by Christa Karns with nine kills, while Ceciley Blanchard and Abbie Rahn added seven kills. Chairo led with five aces, while Rahn had two. Blanchard led with four blocks, Bre Carlton added 30 assists and Chiaro led with 20 digs. It was the ninth time Chiaro reached 20 digs this season. 

UAH was led by Anna LaDuc with nine kills, Anna Claire Johnson with two aces, Isabelle Barnes and LeDuc with four blocks, Kirsten Giles with 17 assists, and Haley Hop with 17 digs. 

Up nest for Union will be a 1 p.m. home match, Saturday, November 4 versus North Alabama. It is homecoming day at Union with volleyball followed by two basketball games for Union. For volleyball, it is also senior day for the lone senior, Blanchard.
