Union women top Brescia behind Shumpert's 31

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team defeated Brescia University 85-55 Saturday afternoon. Union senior Chelsey Shumpert had a career high 31 points in the win. Union improved to 3-0 on the season.

Union started the game with a three-pointer from Tiffany Rechis. The Bulldogs forced Brescia to take a timeout 45 seconds into the game after a 5-0 run. Brescia responded with a three-pointer from Le'Onzerrae Grubs. Union then went on a 8-0 run, making the score 13-3.  The Lady Bulldogs went into the second quarter with a 25-10 lead. 

Union with a 9-0 run, extended their lead to 14 points. Brescia again responded with two made shots from long range. The Bulldogs hit seven three-pointers in the first half and led 45-25 at the half. 

The two teams played evenly in the third quarter, both scoring 16 points a piece. Going into the fourth quarter, the score was 61-41. 

Sara Lyle started a 9-0 run for Union in the fourth quarter. Brescia's Kelsey Kirkpatrick ended Union's run with a long range shot making the score 70-44. 

The Bulldogs then went on a 10-0 run with a little less than four minutes to play. The final score was 85-55. 

Shumpert lead Union with 31 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. Lyle scored 25 points and collected five rebounds. Jada Perkins added 12 points, seven assists, and seven rebounds. The Bulldogs were 48 percent from the field and 36 percent (12-33) from long range.

Brescia was lead by Kelsey Kirkpatrick with 19 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Le'Onzerrae Grubbs scored 18 points with four rebounds and 3 assists. The Bearcats were 37 percent from the field and 35 percent (11-31)  from long range. 

Up next for Union will be another home game Tuesday November 21 at 6:00 p.m. against Lane College.
