Union women hit 19 3's in win over Lane

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team defeated Lane College 90-43 Tuesday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved 4-0, while Lane dropped to 0-4 on the year. 

Union started with a 9-0 lead after three different Lady Bulldogs were good from beyond the arc. Tiffany Rechis had a strong first quarter for the Lady Bulldogs. Rechis was 3-for-4 from 3-point range, helping Union to a commanding 36-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. 

Lane's Rickera Martin scored the first points of the second quarter, but Union responded with a 12-0 run. In the first half Union was 66 percent (12-18) from 3-point range. The Lady Bulldogs led the Dragons 57-17 at halftime.  

Rechis started out the second quarter 2-for-2 from 3-point range, making the score 63-19. Chelsey Shumpert and Avree Carpenter added to the Lady Bulldog lead with two shots from long range. 

Going into the fourth quarter, Union led 71-24. Emily Beard opened up the final quarter with a 3-pointer. Lane's Ashley Gayle responded with a quick layup, making the score 74-26. Despite having their best quarter with 19 points, Lane could not catch up to the Lady Bulldogs. Union cruised to the final score of 90-43. 

Union was led by Rechis with 21 points. Shumpert scored 20 points with eight assists and five rebounds. Little added 14 points and collected 10 rebounds. Union was 57 percent from the field and 55 percent (19-34) from 3-point range.

Lane was led by Rickera Martin with 15 points. Lakeiya Lane score 12 points and collected five assists. Alisha Fortenberry added eight points and had 16 rebounds. Lane was 21 percent for the field and 11 percent (3-26) from long range. 

Up next for Union is an away game at the Drury Thanksgiving Classic against Missouri University S&T on Friday, November 24 at 7:45 p.m.
