JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-16) Friday night in front of a large crowd on Dig Pink Night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union dropped to 11-8 overall and 2-5 in the Gulf South Conference. West Florida, who is receiving votes in the national rankings in the #27 spot, improved to 14-4 overall and 6-0 in league play.
Thirteen individuals and family members were recognized prior to the game for their battles with breast cancer and their stories were told. Both teams supported cancer awareness with pink socks and warm-up shirts. Both also celebrated with the survivors prior to the match with flowers and photos.
In the first set, West Florida took control early with an 8-4 lead out of the gate. The Argos continued to push and held their largest lead of the set, 22-9, before winning 25-13.
Union stormed out to a 6-1 lead in the second set, but could not make it last. UWF scored eight of the next nine points to regain the lead and never looked back, winning 25-15.
In the third set, the Argos this time ran out to a 6-1 lead. Union rallied to cut their deficit to 8-6, before UWF extended their lead again. The Argos won the match with a 25-16 third set victory.
Union was led by Clare Taylor with seven kills and Christa Karns with six kills. Defending GSC Freshman of the Week Bre Carlton led with 22 assists and six digs. Kristen Goggin had Union's lone ace in the match, while Kristen Bukowsky recorded a team high five blocks and adding three kills.
Up next for Union will be a home match Saturday, October 7 at 1 p.m. versus Valdosta State.
