JACKSON, Tenn.- Valdosta State University volleyball outlast Union University 3-2 (16-25, 25-18, 25-17, 20-25, 16-14) on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Bulldogs are now 2-6 in the Gulf South Conference and 11-9 overall. The Lady Blazers improved to 4-3 in conference play and 9-7 overall.
The Lady Bulldogs controlled the first set by going on a 5-0 run in the beginning of the set and then another 4-0 run to keep the lead. The Lady Bulldogs won, 16-25.
In the second set, Valdosta scored the first two points and Union answered with a pair of their own. Valdosta scored the next five points and was able to sustain the lead the rest of the game. The Lady Blazers won 25-18.
The third set was led by Valdosta as they scored the first four points. Union was not able to catch up and the Lady Blazers won 25-17.
The Lady Bulldogs fought their way back in the fourth set. Bre Carlton's block swung the momentum back to Union and Ceciley Blanchard helped put away the Lady Blazers by recording five kills and two blocks in the set. Union won, 20-25.
In the deciding set, the Lady Bulldogs jumped ahead, . Valdosta took a time out at 13-14 that helped them regain their momentum and score the last three points. The Lady Blazers finished the game, 16-13.
Abbie Rahn had 15 kills, Katie O'Malley and Clare Taylor had 12 kills, Bre Carlton had 37 assists for Union.
Up next for Union is the GSC Crossover tournament held in Birmingham, Ala., October 13-14.
