HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Union University volleyball team fell 3-2 (25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-12) Saturday afternoon. Union dropped to 12-14 on the season and 2-9 in the Gulf South Conference. UAH improved to 19-9 overall and 7-3 in league play.
The first set was close for most of the way until UAH extended an 18-17 lead to a 25-19 set victory. Union's only lead of the set was 5-4.
In the second set, Union never trailed in a closely played set. Clinging to a 22-21 lead, Union scored three of the final four points including kills from Abbie Rahn, Bre Carlton, and Ceciley Blanchard.
UAH controlled the third set, leading by as many as seven points before holding off a late run by Union for the 25-23 set victory.
Set four was back in Union's favor. Despite a 5-2 start by the home Chargers, Union scored seven of the next nine points to take the lead. After getting the lead, Union never trailed again in the set. UAH tied the set at 17-17 forcing a timeout from Union. Union then scored four straight points to regain control. After two points from UAH, Union forces a fifth set with four straight points to win 25-19.
In the fifth set, UAH worked their lead to 12-7, looking to cruise to the win. However, Union again battle back. Union scored five of the next seven points to cut the UAH lead to 14-12. UAH got a kill for the 15th point to seal the match win.
Union was led by Rahn with 14 kills, Christa Karns with 13 and Blanchard with 11. Katie O'Malley led with two aces, Rahn led with four blocks, Carlton had 51 assists, and Taylor Chiaro led with 23 digs.
Union freshman Bre Carlton posted a triple-double in the match with 51 aces, 10 kills, and 17 digs. It is the first of her career.
UAH was led by Sanford with 18 kills, Johnson with two aces, Sanford with six blocks, Giles with 45 assists, and Hop with 18 digs.
Up next for Union will be the last of four straight road games, October 28 at Auburn University - Montgomery.
