Union women win 85-72 at Lee in DII Showcase

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team posted an 85-72 win at Lee University Thursday evening. The game was a part of the NCAA DII Showcase shown on WatchESPN and the ESPN App. The win for Union accomplished several feats for the Lady Bulldogs including avenging a five-point loss to Lee 12 days ago, snapping a six-game road skid and also snapped a three game skid overall.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Lee opened the game with a quick layup, but Union responded with six straight points. Jada Smith followed a Bria Gaines put back with two jumpers to give Union a 6-2 lead and the Lady Builldogs never trailed again. Union led by as many as ten points, 24-14, before taking a 24-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Union quickly stretched their lead to 12 points, 28-16, early in the second quarter. Lee cut the deficit to five points, before Union took a 42-35 lead into the locker room. Smith led all scorers with 16 points in first half.
  • Union maintained a comfortable lead in the third quarter, ranging from seven points to as many as 13 points, 66-53, with 1:48 left in the quarter. Lee closed out the third quarter with five straight points to go into the fourth quarter down by eight, 66-58.
  • Lee got as close as six points with just over eight minutes left. However, Union senior Chelsea Bodiford drained her game-high fourth 3-pointer of the contest to keep Union in control. Union led by as many as 15 points late in the game before taking the 85-72 final. Union's Gaines, Tiffany Rechis and Bodiford all scored double-figures in the second half to pace the Lady Bulldogs.

STAT OF THE GAME
Union shot 55 percent (6-11) from long range in the second half, including 3-of-4 from Bodiford and 3-of-6 from Rechis.

  • Union shot 47 percent from the field, 50 percent (8-16) from 3-point range and 78 percent (25-32) from the free throw line.
  • Lee shot 38 percent from the field, 30 percent (6-20) from long range and 65 percent (20-31) from the free throw line.
  • Union out rebounded Lee 42-30, while Lee committed just 10 turnovers to 15 from Union.

PLAYER STATS
  • Smith led Union with 20 points, 16 of them in the first half. Gaines posted her fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Rechis scored 15 points, while Bodiford added 14 points. Fredi Nielsen grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with seven points. Jada Perkins added nine points.
  • Lee was led by Abby Bertram with 20 points and Shelby Brown with 13 points.
