Before Union
Gaines transferred to Union from Western Kentucky University where she played two seasons of basketball. As a sophomore, she played 34 of 35 games, averaging four points and three rebounds per game. She had a season high 22 points in a win over Central Arkansas. As a freshman, she played in 33 games, averaging six points and four rebounds per game. The last eight games of her freshman season, she averaged almost 10 points per game during that stretch. Gaines prepped at Bloom Township High School where she played basketball and volleyball. She was named the Northwest Indiana Times Illinois Girls Basketball Player of the Year as both a junior and senior. She averaged 24 points and 17 rebounds as a senior, posting a double-double in all but one game. She scored 1,593 career points and had 879 career rebounds in high school. She averaged 27 points and 16 rebounds as a junior.
