Union takes win over Lee in DII Showcase, 69-64

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Union University men's basketball team snapped a four game skid with a 69-64 win at Lee on the DII Showcase on WatchESPN and the ESPN App. The Bulldogs avenged a 68-75 loss just 12 days ago in a dramatic comeback win for the Flames.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Union fell behind early in the contest when Lee hit back to back three's to open up the game. The Bulldogs struggled to score in the opening minutes putting up only four points in the first seven minutes of action.
  • The Bulldogs got the ball rolling with Nick Velasquez hitting a three pointer with 5:18 remaining in the first half to give Union their first lead, 22-20. 
  • The Flames did not let the lead last long and closed out the first half converting on back to back possessions to take a 30-26 lead into the half.
  • KC Goodwin and Tray Boyd opened the second half action with back to back three's of their own to give Union the lead once again with play going to more back and forth scoring action. 
  • Neither team was able to gain a double digit advantage in the second half with the Bulldogs largest lead of the game coming with just under eight minutes remaining in regulation at 7 points.
  • Lee made the game too close for comfort down the stretch pulling within just one point, 65-64, with just 35 seconds left on the clock, but Union converted on four free throws from Goodwin and Boyd in the closing second to secure the 69-64 lead.


 
STAT OF THE GAME
Despite shooting just 34 percent from the field and 33 percent from behind the arc in the first half, Union flipped the switch shooting 54 percent from the field in the second half as well as 63 percent in three pointers.

 
TEAM STATS
  • For the game, the Bulldogs shot 44 percent from the field and 47 percent from behind the arc knocking down 11 threes in the contest. Union went 14-of-20 from the charity stripe for the game.
  • Lee shot 40 percent from the field and 39 percent in long balls while hitting 13-of-19 free throws.
  • Union out-rebounded the Flames 38 to 29 in the game, but gave the ball up 13 times compared to just six times for Lee.


PLAYER STATS
  • Jarad Scott was the key played in the win for Union scoring 13 points and grabbing 17 rebounds for the Bulldogs for his seventh double-double of the season.
  • Tray Boyd led the team in scoring with 19 points, going 4-for-8 from behind the arc.
  • Nick Velasquez contributed 14 points of his own with four three pointers, while KC Goodwin scored 12 with five assists.
  • Jervon Johnson led the way for Lee scoring 19 points wit Levi Woods and Keevin Tyus each adding 13.

 
UP NEXT
Union finishes their four game road trip on Saturday at Shorter at 3:00 p.m. The Bulldogs return home on Thursday, February 2nd, to take on West Alabama at 8:00 p.m.
