Union men win second straight with 91-79 victory over MC

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's basketball defeated Mississippi College 91-79 Monday night to even their Gulf South Conference record to 3-3.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Mississippi College opened the game with four straight points before Union responded with a 5-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Tray Boyd. After the teams swapped buckets for a few trips, Union posted a 10-0 run to lead 21-12 lead with 12:01 left in the half. MC cut their deficit to three points a few times, including 25-22. However, Union pushed their lead up to as many as 12 points in the first half, 37-25 at the 2:44 mark, and again 42-30 with 1:04 left. Union settled for a 42-34 halftime lead. 
  • Union kept a 7-12 point lead for the first six minutes of the second half. MC then posted an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to four points, 57-53, with 13:13 left in the game. Union's Ashanti Day stopped the run with a layup. A 7-2 run by Union, six points coming from Day, put the Bulldogs back up by nine points, 64-56, with 10:59 left. 
  • Mississippi College again made a run, scoring seven straight points to cut the Union lead down to 64-62 with 9:08 left. Union stopped the run with a 3-pointer form Boyd. The Choctaws got back within two points, 72-70 with 5:07 left. But again, a Union 3-pointer, this time from Jarad Scott put Union back up by five.
  • With the Bulldogs leading by four, 77-73, Union rolled off five straight points capped by a dunk from Charlie Wilson to push the lead to nine, 82-73, with 2:12 left in the game. Union closed out the game with a 14-6 run over the final 3:45 to seal the 91-79 win. 
  • Union was 4-of-5 from the free throw line in the final two minutes after shooting just 59 percent from the line for the previous 38 minutes.

STAT OF THE GAME
Union's KC Goodwin scored 10 of his team's final 13 points, including a layup 3-of-3 from the charity stripe, a three pointer and a 3-point play.


TEAM STATS
  • Union shot 53 percent from the field, 48 percent (13-27) from 3-point range and 64 percent (14-22) from the free throw line. The Bulldogs were 58 percent from the field in the second half. 
  • Mississippi College shot 50 percent from the field, 46 percent (5-11) from long range and 75 percent (18-24) from the free throw line. 
  • Union out rebounded MC 35-30, 11-8 on the offensive glass. Union forced 14 MC turnovers, while committing 11. 

PLAYER STATS
  • Boyd led five Union players in double figures with a game-high 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Nick Velasquez and Day scored 17 points. Goodwin finished with 15 points, including 10 in the final three minutes of of the game. Goodwin added a game-high eight assists. Charlie Wilson scored 11 points. 
  • Mississippi College was led by Davy Fisher with 15 points, Antonio Johnson added 13 and Stacey Mack scored 12. Xavion Dillon added nine points and a game-high nine rebounds.
