Lady Bulldogs fall in double overtime

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Union University Lady Bulldogs fell in double overtime against the University of West Georgia, 77-73. This is the first time of the season Union has gone to double overtime.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • West Georgia scored first on a layup, but Union answered with a 3-pointer from Astrid Huttemann in the Lady Bulldog's next possession. UWG pushed ahead 6-3, but Union battled back to take the lead 8-6. For the rest of the first quarter both teams went back and forth. With just under two minutes left, the score was tied 16-16 when Chelsea Bodiford made a three to push the Lady Bulldogs ahead 19-16.
  • In the second quarter, Union was able to continue the momentum to lead 23-16 after a 7-0 run. The Lady Bulldogs had a 10-point lead, 28-18, at one point in the second quarter, but the Wolves would not be silenced going on a 7-0 run to go into the half down two points, 31-29.
  • The teams again went back and forth at the beginning of the third quarter, but West Georgia took back the lead thanks to scoring six straight, 36-33. Union would come back to tie UWG 37-37, but UWG would end the third quarter on top, 44-41.
  • Play was even in the fourth quarter. The Lady Bulldogs were able to get a four point lead 50-46, but again the Wolves were resilient to work back to tie Union, 52-52. The Lady Bulldogs were down, 56-54 with just over a minute remaining in the game. Bria Gains was fouled on a shot and make both free throws to tie the game, 56-56 with 26 seconds left. Neither team would score in the remaining seconds to take the game to overtime.
  • West Georgia scored first in the first overtime to lead, 58-56. Union would then score five straight to take a three point lead, 61-58. In UWG's advantage, Union fouled to send the Wolves to the charity stripe which would allow West Georgia to send the game to double overtime, 64-64.
  • West Georgia's resilient play was enough to outlast the Lady Bulldogs to outscore Union 13-9 in the second overtime to win the game, 77-73. The Lady Bulldogs never led in the second overtime.

STAT OF THE GAME
Bria Gaines shattered her season high in points (20 vs. Rust College) after scoring 33 points in tonight's game.

TEAM STATS
  • Union shot 37 percent from the field, 26 percent (8-for-31) from 3-point range, and 75 percent (15-for-20) from the foul line.
  • West Georgia shot 32 percent from short range, 12 percent (3-for-25) from behind the arc, and 87 percent (26-for-30) from the free throw line.

PLAYER STATS
  • Bria Gains led the Lady Bulldogs with 33 points while adding 10 rebounds. The only other Union player in double figure points was Chelsea Bodiford with 11 points in her first game back from injury. Jada Perkins led Union with 12 boards.
  • West Georgia was led by De'Ashia Jones with 33 points and 16 rebounds.
