ROME, Ga. – The Union University volleyball team was swept by Shorter University to drop to 4-7 on the season and 1-2 in Gulf South Conference competition. The Lady Hawks took down the Lady Bulldogs 25-11, 25-16, and 30-28. Shorter is the only team in the GSC that remains undefeated on the season with a 10-0 record, and perfect conference record of 5-0.
SU dominated the first two sets against Union. Shorter posted two 5-0 runs in the first set to push ahead of the Lady Bulldogs to win the set, 25-11. In the second set, Union was able to come back with a four point run to tie the score, 6-6, but the Lady Hawks gradually pulled away to take the second set, 25-16.
The Lady Bulldogs found some traction in the third set with a 5-0 run which pushed them ahead, 7-3. Both teams traded points, but Shorter made a comeback scoring eight unanswered points to take the lead, 13-8. Union responded a couple possessions later with five point run to tie SU, 14-14. Shorter started to pull away, the Lady Bulldogs were able to come back and tie the Lady Hawks, 21-21. Facing match point, 24-22, Union was able to score two points to tie the set 24-all. Both teams traded points, but the Lady Hawks outlasted the Lady Bulldogs to take the third and final set 30-28.
Ceciley Blanchard,
Hannah Huguley, and
Abby Schebel each had five kills to lead Union in the match. Huguley added 12 assists, and
Audrey Cagle led with eight digs.
The Lady Bulldogs will be on the road this weekend facing off against the University of North Alabama Friday, September 23 at 7pm and the University of Alabama Huntsville Saturday, September 24 at 2pm. Union will return home for Family Weekend with matches on Friday, September 30 at 7pm and Saturday, October 1 at 1pm.
