JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University volleyball team swept Mississippi College, 3-0, to get their first conference win of the season. The Lady Bulldogs improved to 1-1 in Gulf South Conference play and 4-6 on the season. MC dropped to 0-3 in conference play and 6-4 for the season.
The Lady Bulldogs fell behind Mississippi College early in the first set, 2-0, but managed to come back with a 4-0 run to take the lead. Later in the set, Mississippi College had a five point lead over Union, 16-11. The Lady Bulldogs shipped away to come back and take the lead 19-18 over MC. Both teams remained neck-and-neck, but Union was able to pull away to get the first set win, 25-22.
The Lady Bulldogs dominated the second set against Mississippi College. Union was up 21-14 late in the set, but MC found some momentum to work back within four points of the Lady Bulldogs. Union was able to finish the set on top, 25-19.
In the third and final set, Mississippi College was able to hang with the Lady Bulldogs, tying the game 7-7, but Union controlled the set to get the win, 25-16. In the match, the Lady Bulldogs had 11 service aces and a .248 kill percentage to push them to their first conference win of the season.
Union was led by
Deja Moorer with 11 kills followed by
Ceciley Blanchard with nine kills.
Alecia Funk helped with 18 assists, and
Hannah Huguley added 17 assists. Defensively,
Audrey Cagle led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 digs.
Union will start a three-game road trip, traveling to Shorter University to take on the Lady Hawks Tuesday, September 20 at 6pm. The Lady Bulldogs will return home Friday, September 30 when they host Valdosta State University at 7pm.
