JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team posted a 5-0 win over Kentucky Wesleyan College Tuesday night at Smith Soccer Complex. Union improved to 2-3 on the season, while Kentucky Wesleyan dropped to 0-5.
Union was led by Joel Ronkko with a pair of goals, both coming back-to-back early in the second half. His goals were assisted by Rodrigo Zonta and Andre Silva.
Union did not waste any time getting the scoring started as Paul Langford put in the game winning goal just 1:43 into play. Ten minutes later, Union led 2-0 after Zac Fletcher scored on an assist from Cole Asfour in the 12th minute of play.
Union led 2-0 at the break, then 4-0 just under seven minutes into play in the second half thanks to Ronkko's two goals. Lucas Lopes capped the scoring in the 71st minute with a goal, assisted by Anthony Russo to set the final at 5-0.
Union outshot Kentucky Wesleyan 25-6 in the match, including 15-4 in the first half. Robel Dent led Union with five total shots, while Ronkko added four shots. Pedro Haniel earned the shutout with his 90 minutes of work. Grant Allen worked 78 minutes in goal for the Pioneers with nine saves, while Jacob Stauffer spent the last 12 minutes in goal for KWC.
Up next for Union will be their Gulf South Conference opener at West Florida, Friday, September 16. It will be the first of three straight GSC road matches before Union returns home September 30 versus Shorter.
