GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Union University softball team (1-8) finished the Gulf Shores (Ala.) Invitational going 1-4 on the weekend. Friday, Union got their first win of the season against McKendree (Ill.) University 11-1, and then lost 4-3 to Southern Nazarene (Okla.) University. The Lady Bulldogs dropped both games on Saturday to Simon Fraser (Canada), 5-3, and Rockhurst (Mo.) University, 9-1. Sunday, Union fell to No. 7 University of Missouri St. Louis, 8-0.
In the loss to No. 7 Missouri-St. Louis, Union was no-hit while allowing 10 hits to the Tritons in the 8-0 loss. A 3-run home run allowed in the second inning led to a 5-run frame.
In Saturday's first game, Union got a 3-run home run from
Reagan Schrader to tie the game. However, Simon Fraser got single runs in the fourth and seventh to take the 5-3 win.
Rockhurst scored six runs in the first inning to take control of the game late Saturday night. Union got their only run in the third when
Summer Cross hit a single to drive in
LaDesha Nelson. Union lost 9-1 in five innings.
Friday, Union got their first win of the season in an 11-1 win over McKendree. Union scored a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Cross. After McKendree answered with a game-tying run in the bottom of the first, Union added four runs in the third. The big hit was a two RBI double by
Rachel Ridolfi. Union scored four more runs in the fourth inning. A run scoring double from
Haley Barnette followed by a single from Ridolfi got things started in the fourth.
Madison Tennyson followed with a sacrifice fly. Union added two more in the fifth on a RBI single form Cross and a steal of home by
Emily Bennett.
Union lost the second game Friday, 4-3, to Southern Nazarene. All the scoring was done in the first two innings. Southern Nazarene scored three in the first, followed by a pair of runs in the bottom of the first for Union. Barnette hit a 2-run home run, scoring Bennett. SNU added a run in the second, followed by a run by Union in the second. Cross singled to get Union to with 4-3.
Up next for Union is a 3-game Gulf South Conference opening series at West Georgia, February 13-14 in Carrolton, Ga.
