Union men’s basketball tops Brewton-Parker 99-84

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team posted a 99-84 win over Brewton-Parker (Ga.) College Saturday afternoon at Fred-DeLay Gymnasium. Union led by as many as 30 points in both the first and second halves of the game.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Brewton-Parker started the game with a basket on their first possession, and moved out to a 17-13 lead at the 15:32 mark. Union responded in a big way. First with a 10-0 run to take the lead and after a basket by Brewton-Parker, the Bulldogs rolled off 23 straight points to lead 46-17 with 5:21 left in the half. Union went to the locker room up 58-32, after leading by as many as 30 points on two occasions in the first half. 
  • Union matched their largest lead at 30 points, 69-39, early in the second half. However, Brewton-Parker outscored Union 17-4, including a 12-0 run, over a four minute stretch to cut the Union lead down to 17 points. Union's Nick Velasquez stopped the run with a 3-pointer to put Union back up by 20, 76-56, with 11:38 left. Union extended the lead back to as many as 28 points, 90-62, with 6:42 left. 
  • Brewton-Parker again rallied to pull back into the game. Following a 17-0 run, BPC cut the Union lead down to just 11 points, 90-79, with 2:20 left to play. KC Goodwin stopped the run with  a pair of free throws with 1:28 left in the game. Union settled for the 99-84 win.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
Over a 10 minute stretch in the first half, Union went from down four to up by 27 points thanks to a 33-2 run.

TEAM STATS
  • Union shot 53 percent from the field, 48 percent (13-27) from 3-point range and 90 percent (18-20) from the free throw line. 
  • Brewton-Parker shot 44 percent from the field, 27 percent (6-22) form long range and 77 percent (10-13) from the free throw line. 
  • Union shot 64 percent from the field in the first half. The Bulldogs out-rebounded BPC 40-37, but gave up the offensive glass, 13-9. 

PLAYER STATS
  • Union was led by KC Goodwin with 20 points. Tray Boyd, Ashanti Day and Nick Velasquez added 19 points each, while Jarad Scott scored 14 points with 11 rebounds. 
  • Brewton-Parker was led by Miller with 26 points. Bush added 20, Wright scored 15 and Lanier added 10  points and 11 rebounds. 
 
UP NEXT
Union will open Gulf South Conference play Tuesday, November 29 at home versus Christian Brothers at 8 p.m.
