No. 18 Union women cruise past CBU 66-38

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The No. 18 Union University women's basketball team posted a 66-38 win Thursday night at Christian Brothers University. Union improved to 15-2 on the season and 9-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers dropped to 6-9 overall and 4-7 in league play. 

This game concluded the first trip through the conference schedule and Union has guaranteed at least a share of first place midway through the conference schedule. 

Union's Chelsea Bodiford got things started with a 3-pointer. Christian Brothers responded with a pair of layups to take their first and only lead of the game, 4-3. Union's Carnecia Williams then hit two free throws to give Union the lead for good. Those two free throws started a 10-0 run for Union. The Lady Bulldogs led 13-5 at the end of the first quarter. Union extended their lead to as many as 19 points by the end of the first half, leading 31-12 at the break. Union closed the half on a 12-1 run capped by a 3-pointer from Kelsey Risner in the final seconds. 

Tiara Caldwell's layup to start the second half put Union's lead into the 20's. Union led by as many as 31 points, 55-24, early in the fourth quarter and coasted to the 66-38 win. 

Union's bench again shined as the reserved posted at least 25 points for the third straight game, including over 30 in the previous two games. 

Union was led by Bodiford with 15 points with five 3-pointers. Caldwell finished with 13 points, all coming in the second half. Williams scored 10 points while Risner led with 12 rebounds. Jada Smith dished out seven assists. Union shot 40 percent from the field, 32 percent (10-31) from long range and 60 percent (6-10) from the free throw line. 

Christian Brothers was led by Schaefer with 10 points. The Lady Bucs shot 19 percent from the field, was 0-for-22 from behind the arc and shot 70 percent (16-23) from the free throw line.
