Union soccer comes up short in first road match

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- The Union University men's soccer team dropped their second straight game after being shutout by Southern Indiana Sunday afternoon by the score of 4-0.

Union (0-2) held the Southern Indiana (2-0) scoreless through much of the first half of the game. It wasn't until the 42nd minute that the Screaming Eagles netted their first goal. Freshman Erick Hasselkus shot a ball past the Union defense and into the net off of a pass from Pedro Castro who earned an assist on the play. The score would remain a manageable 1-0 going into the half.

Southern Indiana wasted no time in the opening minutes of the second half to strengthen their lead first with a penalty kick from Cesar Alba that got past Taylor Smith, the Union goalkeeper, in the 48th minute. Less than a minute later, the Screaming Eagles scored their third goal of the match on a corner kick into the box from Alba that was headed in by Josh Weinzapfel.

The Bulldogs would have an opportunity to get on the board with their own penalty kick in the 73rd minute, the shot from Paul Langford was knocked down by the USI goalie. Southern Indiana would put the final nail in the coffin in the 79th minute with another goal from Hasslekus to put the final score at 4-0.

Union will return home for another Friday night game when they host Harding on September 11th at 7 p.m. at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex. The Bulldogs start Gulf South Conference play September 25th at home against West Florida at 7:15 p.m.
