VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Union University softball lost in their first round game in the 2015 Gulf South Conference Championships to Shorter (Ga.) University 2-1. Union, seeded No. 5 in the tournament, dropped to 31-18 on the season. Fourth seeded Shorter improved to 32-14 overall.
Union will play again Friday morning at 9 a.m. central time versus sixth seeded Delta State (Miss.) in an elimination game.
Shorter struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. Union had several scoring opportunities early but were stung by three double plays in the game. Union got their run in the top of the fourth. Caylee Crews hit and RBI single to right field scoring Summer Cross. Union threatened to get more in the inning with the bases loaded and one out. However, a pop up and ground out ended the inning.
Union had another great scoring opportunity in the top of the seventh as a two-out rally started up. Two walks put the tying run on second base. Summer Cross laced line drive that was headed for the left-center gap. However, Shorter's center fielder Niki Cook raced over to make the running catch to save the game for her Hawks.
Union managed just two hits in the game, a double from Carter Mansolino in the second and the RBI hit from Crews in the fourth. Union were given seven walks, but only one of those runners scored. Kelly Robey (28-13) tossed six innings, allowing two runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts and just one walk.
