VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Union University softball team fell 1-0 in eight innings to Delta State (Miss.) University Friday in an elimination game in the 2015 Gulf South Conference Championships. Union ends their season at 31-19. Sixth seeded Delta State stayed alive, improving to 27-23.

Union senior pitcher Kelly Robey (28-14) and Delta State pitcher Shayna Beaver (11-7) were locked in a pitchers dual, allowing no runs in the regulation seven innings.

Union threatened right off the bat, with runners on second and third with no outs in the top of the first. But Delta State and Beaver pitched out of the jam.

Union left eight runners on base in the loss. The Lady Bulldogs struggled in both games of the tournament in scoring runs, managing just one tally in 15 innings of play.

Robey was stellar in the circle for Union, tossing eight innings allowing six hits and just the one run. She did not allow her first hit of the game until the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, Rodriguez walked to lead off the inning for DSU. After a sacrifice bunt and a hit batter, Delta State had runners on first and second with one out. Adcock then singled to left field and Rodriguez tried to score from second. However, a throw from left fielder Alex Williams nailed Rodriguez at the plate, keeping the game scoreless for the moment. Then Moore laced a hard single to left field scoring the winning run from third base.

Union ends there first season as active members of the NCAA Division II and Gulf South Conference. Union advanced to the six-team field as the No. 5 seed. Only the top six seeds of the 12-member conference made the tournament.
