JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team fell 10-5 Tuesday to Freed-Hardeman University at Fesmire Field. Union led for seven innings, and did not trail in the game until the ninth inning.
Union (5-27) took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double from
Jim Martin. Union led 4-0 after three runs in the second inning. A bases loaded walk gave
Daniel Mathis an RBI. Tyler Warminont followed with a sacrifice fly, then
Davis Shoemaker scored on an error. Freed-Hardeman got on the board in the third with three runs to cut their deficit to 4-3.
Union extended their lead to 5-4 in the fourth when Martin singled in Warnimont. Freed-Hardeman cut the deficit to one again scoring on an error in the sixth. FHU then tied the game in the eight inning 5-5 on an RBI double from Trollinger. In the ninth inning, Freed-Hardeman scored five runs, four unearned to win 10-5.
Union's defense let down for the second straight game. Union gave up six unearned runs in the loss.
Preston Thompson started and tossed the first five innings, allowing just two earned runs, four runs total on seven hits with six strikeouts.
Trae Bain (1-3) took the loss in relief, allowing six runs, two earned in 2.2 innings.
Chaz Wilson tossed the final one-third of an inning.
Union was led offensively by Martin with a 2-for-3 game with a walk and was hit by a pitch. He recorded a team high two RBI.
Up next for Union will be a home game Wednesday, April 15 at 5 p.m. versus Cumberland University.
