JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University softball posted a 5-0 win in the final game of a 3-game series with the University of West Alabama behind the third no-hitter of the season for
Kelly Robey. Union won the series two games to one, after winning 6-3 in game one. West Alabama (17-22, 9-18) took the second game 21-8.
Union (25-15, 15-15) took the lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. An RBI single from
Madison Tennyson scored pinch-runner
Megan Wolinsky.
Caylee Crews then scored on a wild pitch. Union added a third run in the fourth inning and another RBI single from Tennyson, scoring
Alex Williams.
In the sixth inning, Union added two insurance runs when Williams scored on a wild pitch, followed by an RBI single from
Summer Cross, scoring Tennyson.
Robey (22-10) tossed her third no-hitter of the season and second in Gulf South Conference play (West Florida). She posted 10 strikeouts and three walks in her seven innings of work.
Emily Bennett, Crews, Williams and Tennyson led with two hits each. Tennyson's two RBI led the Lady Bulldogs.
Game 1 (Union 6, UWA 3)
Union scored quickly with two runs in the first with an RBI single from
Reagan Schrader and a 2-RBI double from Crews. Union went up 4-0 after a RBI single from Cross in the second. West Alabama cut their deficit to just one following a 3-run home run in the fourth from Chavez. Union added two insurance runs in the fifth on an RBI ground out from
Whitney Christian and a RBI single from
Carlie Brickley.
Robey earned the win, tossing seven innings and allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Six different Union players recorded one hit each for Union, while Crews' two RBI was team best.
Game 2 (UWA 21, Union 8)
In the second game of the series, Union's offense was the best of the weekend, but the pitching and defense let down the Lady Bulldogs. West Alabama scored five in the first, followed by three runs in the bottom of the frame from Union to get back into the game. However, after a scoreless second for both teams, West Alabama pulled away with eight runs in the third. Union scored four in the fourth to prevent the game from ending by run rule in five innings. After both teams went scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings, West Alabama scored eight more runs in the top of the seventh. Union added a run in the bottom of the seventh but fell in the slugfest.
Paige Taylor (1-2) took the loss, while three pitchers combined to allow 21 runs on 19 hits, and only 13 earned runs. Union pitchers walked just two in the game and posted four strikeouts. Union was led by
Carter Mansolino with three of Union's nine hits. She also led with two RBI. Union committed two costly errors in the loss.
Up next for Union will be road conference weekend at Alabama Huntsville April 18-19.
