HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Union University softball team played No. 11 Alabama Huntsville close in a three game weekend series, winning once and falling in extra's in the series finale. UAH topped Union 5-0 in the first game. Union responded in the second game of the double-header with a 1-0 win. The UAH topped Union 3-2 in eight innings to win the series.
Game 1: UAH 5, Union 0
UAH (34-10, 21-7 GSC) scored first with a home run from Bannister in the third inning. The Chargers added single runs in the fourth and fifth, and two in the sixth to win 5-0. Union (26-17, 14-15) outhit the UAH 6-5 in the game, being led by
Emily Bennett and
Carter Mansolino with two hits each.
Kelly Robey (23-12) took the complete game loss, allowing five runs, three earned on five hits with eight walks and four strikeouts.
Game 2: Union 1, UAH 0
IN the second game, UAH outhit Union 7-6, but it was Union managing the only run of the game. Mansolino's third inning hit drove in Bennett for the game winner. Robey earned the complete game win, scattering seven hits in the shutout, while striking out six and walking none. Mansolino led Union with two hits.
Game 3: UAH 3, Union 2 (8 innings)
In the series finale, Union jumped out to the early lead on Bennett's first career home run in the first inning. That 1-0 lead for Union held until UAH tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. After a scoreless seventh for both teams, the game went into extras tied at 1-1. Union scored in the top of the eighth as
Hailey Cummings singled to score
Summer Cross and give Union the 2-1 lead. However, in the bottom of the inning, UAH scored twice. Roberts tied the game on a wild pitch, while Frith drove in Sullivan on a sacrifice fly. The run was unearned. Robey took the loss, tossing 7.2 innings, allowing three runs, two earned on six hits. She struck out three and walked four. Cummings led Union with a pair of hits.
Union has just one weekend left in GSC play as they host West Georgia April 25-26 to close out the regular season.
