HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Union University women's basketball team earned a 64-62 win at the University of Alabama in Huntsville Saturday afternoon. Union improved to 22-3 on the season and 18-3 in the Gulf South Conference. Alabama Huntsville dropped to 11-16 overall and 8-13 in league play.
Union, having clinched the GSC regular season title and top seed in the conference tournament with their win Thursday night, was looking to keep winning in order to preserve their No. 1 South Region ranking and possible region tournament host.
After two completely different halves of play, the score was tied 62-62 with 1:59 left to play following a 3-point play by Huntsville's Halle Jarnagin. Both teams missed on chances to take the lead. Then after a UAH turnover, Union had the ball with 30 seconds left and held for the last shot. Union senior
Amy Philamlee was fouled with one second left. She promptly made both free throws for the last of her game-high 33 points.
After Union jumped out to an early 14-4 lead, UAH rallied to take a brief 20-18 lead. That was the only lead of the game for the Chargers. Union's
Chelsea Bodiford hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put Union up 24-20. Those two 3-pointers from Bodiford sparked a 15-0 run to lead 33-20 at the break.
In the second half, UAH slowly began to chip way starting with a pair of 3-pointers form Josi Saunders to start the half. Union's Philamlee had a quick 5-0 run of her own with a layup followed by a 3-pointer and Union was back up by 12 points, 40-28, with 15:25 left to play. But UAH continued to rally and eventually tied the game with 1:59 left.
Union was led by Philamlee with 33 points and six assists. Bodiford finished with 12 points including four 3-pointers. Five other Union players scored in the game, but none more that five points. Union shot 39 percent from the field, 39 percent (9-23) from long range and 83 percent (15-18) from the free throw line.
Alabama Huntsville was led by Jarnagin with 20 points. Josi Saunders added 16 points and S. Steinert scored 13. The Chargers shot 36 percent from the field, 26 percent (7-27) from 3-point range and made all 11 free throws.
Up next for Union will be their final regular season game Thursday, February 26 at Christian Brothers. Listen on 93.1 FM or online at
