MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team won their eighth straight game with a 73-61 win at Christian Brothers University to close out the regular season. Union, ranked No. 7/16 in the two national polls, improved to 23-3 on the season and finished 19-3 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers dropped to 8-20 overall and 6-16 in league play.
Union takes their winning streak into the conference tournament first round Tuesday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m. Union will host the No. 8 seed in the quarterfinal game, but the opponent is yet to be determined. Three teams are fighting for the final two spots in the conference tournament with those teams finish up their regular season Saturday.
The game started with a 3-pointer from CBU's Breanna Ridgell. Union's
Amber Rechis answered with one of her five 3-pointers in the game.
Amy Philamlee then added a 3-point play to put Union up 6-3. The teams went back and forth over the first seven-plus minutes, playing to a 13-13 tie with 12:28 minutes left in the half.
Over the next seven minutes, Union outscored Christian Brothers 19-9 to lead 32-22 with 5:56 left. But CBU rallied to cut Union's halftime lead down to just two points, 36-34.
In the second half, Union scored five quick points.
DeAnna Thompson opened with a layup followed by another 3-pointer from Rechis. Union controlled the second half, leading by as many as 16 points on several occasions.
Union was led by the reigning conference and national player of the week, Philamlee, with 28 points including 10-of-14 shooting from the field, 2-of-3 from long range and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Rechis finished with 17 points including five three points. Thompson posted her 11
th double-double of the year with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Philamlee led with six assists. Union shot 44 percent from the field, 27 percent (8-20) from 3-point range and 79 percent (15-19) from the free throw line.
Christian Brothers was led by Ridgell with 25 points. Rachel Lee added 15 points, while Taylor Pugh scored 10 points. The Lady Bucs shot 42 percent from the field, 33 percent (5-15) from behind the arc and 75 percent (12-16) from the free throw line.
