JACKSON, Tenn. – The No. 11 Union University Lady Bulldog basketball team took their first conference win of the season against Shorter (Ga.) University, 53-44. Union remained undefeated with a record of 7-0. The Lady Hawks dropped to 4-1 on the season. It was the first Gulf South Conference game of the season for both teams.
The Lady Bulldogs started the first quarter on top 5-0 thanks to a
Jada Perkins three pointer and layup. Union remained ahead for the rest of the first quarter, holding a slim 11-10 lead after the first ten minutes. In the second quarter, Union's
Jada Smith got things started with a 3-pointer to extend the Lady Bulldogs lead to 14-10. The Lady Hawks answered with an 8-0 run to take the lead. Shorter lengthened their lead to 21-16 with a three pointer by Tamarr Williams. After a Shorter turnover in the final seconds, Union's
Tiffany Rechis drove in for a layup to cut Union's halftime deficit to four points, 27-23.
Union found some footing in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Hawks 16-5 in the third period. A jumper by Smith brought Union within two points of the Lady Hawks. Union's
Tiara Caldwell was able to tie the game 29-29 with a layup. The Lady Bulldogs trailed for the final time at 41-40 with 05:21 remaining in the game. Union then outscored Shorter 12-4 in the remaining five minutes to seal win, 53-44.
Union was led by Smith with 20 points, the lone Union player in double figures.
Kelsey Risner had a career high 20 rebounds to help Union to the win. From the field, the Lady Bulldogs shot 40 percent, 21 percent (3-14) from the 3-point line and 71 percent (10-14) from the free throw line.
The 53 points for Union was the lowest point total, for the Lady Bulldogs, since February 22, 2014 in a game against Delta State where they scored 46. Also, the last time Union hit three 3-pointers or less was three against the University of West Georgia January 30, 2014.
Shorter was led by Tamarr Williams with nine points and Taylor Adams with 12 rebounds. The Lady Hawks shot 29 percent from the field, 33 percent (8-24) from long range and 29 percent (2-7) from the free throw line.
Union will continue GSC play with their final home game this semester, Saturday, December 6 at 2 p.m. versus Lee University.
